Camera Test: automatic vs. manual

46/365

Here is a camera test we did today. You can really see what a difference there is between using the preset automatic setting on your camera or using manual and setting everything yourself.

Shooting in manual mode isn't easy, but worth it.

Practice. Practice. Practice.

Cologne: Dusk & Dawn

This is a shot from my hotel room in Cologne. One shot at dawn and the second shot at dusk the same day.

What do you think?

Cologne: Night

43/365

I am in Cologne, Germany on a business trip for a few days. Here are some shots from my hotel room. The first shot is my favorite. It is of the main train station with the famous "Kölnner Dom". My favorite things on this picture are the colors, the blurry train pulling in, and the mix of old and new.

These pictures are not edited in anyway.

The other two pictures below the main one are also shot from my balcony.

The Girls & Surfing

41/365

We took a trip today to the English Garden in Munich to see the surfers. Yes, that's right - surfers in Munich, Germany. After watching them for a while we walked around the park and the kids got to play in what little snow was left and the puddles.

I've thought further about this picture and decided I should have played around with the color more. I've added now a second version (first picture is the one originally posted).

Work from work. Today I had to do a quick shoot for our blog at work. Here is the final picture. We have a cool contest starting on Wednesday, where five of these will be the prizes. Blog post contest goes live on Wednesday - check it out.

Artichokes

33/365

I was out at the market today, and decided to try my hand at manual focus. At the time I took this picture I was really excited, thought it was a great shot - only to come home and find out it is out of focus.

I took several other shots, thankfully the rest were in focus but unfortunately not very interesting. So I decided to post this one anyway.  :)

Live and learn.

What a Difference WB Can Make

32/365

The only thing I adjusted on these pictures was the white balance (WB); other than trimming the second picture there were not any edits done.

Once again I am a bit stuck on which one I think is the better photograph. There are elements that I like about each of them.

Which one do you think is more interesting and why?

First Self-Portrait

27/365

I was reading some tips on Courtney Slazinik's website (http://clickitupanotch.com/2013/12/photography-project-ideas/) and she suggested doing regular self-portraits. I have decided to try what she's recommended and take a self-portrait on the 12th of every month (the date of my birthday).

Here are my first attempts of a self-portrait. I have posted my three favorites. Leave a comment and tell me which one you think is best. If you have any tips or constructive criticism I'd love to hear it.

Which is the best?

Thread

21/365

I was quite torn between this picture and another one, however found this one somehow more interesting. I like that there is just this one line in the middle that is focused and I feel complemented by the horizontal lines.

But I'm interested in what you think? Interesting or boring?

Ski-Jumping

16/365

Today I have two pictures to share with you. One a bit more "serious" and the second for fun.

F: 5.6 | T: 1/500 | ISO:100

Focal length: 300 mm

Here is a second one from today, just for fun. It needs to be sharper and I think it would be more visually appealing if it were within the "Golden Rule" and I could have positioned the jumper on the other side of the picture.

Your thoughts?
