Mountain of Steel.

Week 4/52

Perfect Timing is a weekly photography project by two friends who met in college, became roommates and have been close ever since. We share a love for languages and travel, and although we're from the same southern state, we now live on different continents, balancing a demanding work life with a private life. We both agree that everything happens for a reason, whether we see these moments as positive or negative at the time, propelling us ahead or slowing us down. We hope you will join us each week, as we share little moments of Perfect Timing with you.

The more I travel the more I learn to appreciate the beauty in the train stations in Germany. This particular shot below is from the main station in Berlin. No matter how often I am there, or how tired I am when I arrive it is always one of the stations that stops me in my tracks (no pun intended) - six floors, a mass of metal. Steel and iron combined with glass creates not only the obvious industrial feel (which I am fond of) but there is something majestic, something mysterious about it. Maybe it is just the simplicity of the architectural design or the fact that these massive structures house countless stories of the travelers who wander, walk, run and wait day in and day out beneath its heavy beams.

Next time you are traveling, whether for business or pleasure I would encourage you to stop, slow down and find the beauty in your surroundings. It's there, sometimes you just have to look a little harder.

I knew from the moment we met that it'd be a lasting friendship. Kindred spirits. It was as if we had always known each other. Like family. My dear friend Madalena of my personal coffee break. When she's not busy running her own company, she is out exploring new places, jogging or enjoying a great cup of joe. I am sure you will adore her as much as I do. Savour the Moment.

Week 3/52

I spent approximately six hours walking around in Munich one day this past week trying to find locations to get in a few shots for one of two projects I am working on this semester; this project is entitled "Glauben"*. The majority of my scouring took place in breathtaking churches located through out downtown Munich. The cathedral in the picture below was the last one I visited that day.

I almost skipped going to this beautiful place. Since it was the end of the day, I was already near a metro station - tired, feet hurt and was chilled to the bone after so many hours outside, but I had this feeling that I wasn't fully satisfied with all the photos I had taken. I wasn't satiated.

Boy, was I glad I didn't go home. Even though I started my search right at daylight all of the cathedrals already had individuals there - either tourists taking in the sights or believers spending quite time praying and contemplating...all of the churches except for this one. As I walked in this peaceful space was filled with a soft yet powerful sound of the organ. The organ, as in most cathedrals I've seen, was massive and located in the back of the church on a balcony and took up most of the length of the wall. However since it was located were it was I never saw the person who was playing.

I recognized what a great opportunity it was to have this peaceful serene moment and savoured every second of it, just sitting on the steps and in the pews in this massive work of art.

Recognize the moments when they present themselves. Savour each precious second. Life is short. You never know when those next moments will come again.

*Glauben is a German word which translates to belief in English.

As life gets busier and busier sometimes it is necessary to just stop. Get out of the city, away from the hectic push and pressure to do more and move faster. Stop and enjoy the beauty sounding us. Enjoy the stillness, the quite. And in these precious moments be thankful.

I knew from the moment we met that it'd be a lasting friendship. Kindred spirits. It was as if we had always known each other. Like family. My dear friend Madalena of my personal coffee break. No matter how busy we get, it's important to take time every once and awhile just to sit back and enjoy the moment. And hey, if you live in Munich, Germany what better place to take that moment than at a local beer garden.

For me in this moment I had just finished a photo shoot with my family, the kids and my husband were playing and I got to enjoy a bit of quite time...and a "Maß" of beer.

*Maß: German word for a liter mug / stein of beer
